Super Smash Brothers Melee...a name that will go down in Nintendo Game History. Super Smash Brothers Melee is the latest greatest reincarnation of the N64 game Super Smash Brother that was pretty good for the N64. SSBM pushes the gaming envelope to become a players choice favorite. Given 4-5 stars by almost all the reviewers (I've seen) it is a monument to itself.
Super Smash Brothers Melee is a Nintendo Gamecube only fighting game that stars several of Nintendos most famous and infamous characters. From good old Mario to Pokemon it has 25 playable characters. The Normal 14 characters consist of Mario ,Pikachu ,Bowser ,Peach ,Yoshi ,DK ,Captain Falcon
,Fox ,Ness ,IceClimbers ,Kirby ,Samus ,Zelda/Sheik ,and Link. This alone is enough for a pretty impressive fight. Add in the secret 11 characters
Dr. Mario ,Luigi ,Ganondorf ,Falco ,Young Link ,Pichu ,Jigglypuff ,Mewtwo
,Mr. Game & Watch ,Marth ,and Roy you get an all out Melee! Ever character has his/or her own special and varied attacks ,and styles. This makes your strategic side necessary. You can make your own attack style, and even develop sinister combos to blow the shit out of your opponent.
The game play is superb, that is all I can say. It is fairly easy to get use to, and is very heart pounding. It is all fast action, and quick eye movements. You have to develop fast reflexes because unlike most fighting games there are usually 4 fighter on screen at a time. In fact, the game is four player! The game is at it's peak with a few good buddies joining you. It is also easy to navigate. The menus all are big and easy to read and understand. The few action levels are also easy to navigate because they are all side scroller levels. However, this actually helps.
The side scrolling of levels gives it the feeling of the classic games which they were based after. This allows you to use older strategies in combat. Even though the game is a side scroller, all the levels, and characters (except one) are 3-D. It also uses many classic themes from older games. It is nicely animated with every character with his or her own voice, and personality. It accurately portrays all the characters in the way you think (and feel) the way they should. You can also taunt to make fun of you enemies. Also, if you don't like there outfits you can change them. Every character has there own set of different suits. Some suits resemble other characters from other games. This makes it feel like there are more characters than there really are.
Goals are widely diverse, plain and simple. You have so many goals to achieve that it takes what feels like forever, but in a good way. It is almost video game ecstasy doing one goal at a time, or achieving many at a time. Trophies are another thing. You get trophies from achieving goals, beating games, finding on the ground of stages, and even playing the lotto. There are 290 different trophies to collect and view. Every trophy has there own character, level, object, whatever on it. You can view it closely and study it, or just admire it with several different viewing options. The trophies also have there own little bios. Where you can learn what it is, where it came from, what is it's significance ,what games is it in, and even more information.
The game has several stages that you can fight in. How many I don't know, but you start off with 18 Melee stages, and you end up with 29 stages. However, like I said before, there are several extra stages that you encounter, and play on. Every stage has it's own lay out, and set of tricks, traps, and changes. You can also change the background music on some stages by holding the shoulder buttons (L or R). Most stages are remakes of old stages of older games. In general the levels are well laid out, and have been (In my opinion) laid out to benefit large brawls.
In general, the game has excellent replay values, and even has a fun mini game at the end of the one player game. It's kinda like a starfighter game where you shoot the credits to get extra info, and the more hits you get the higher your score (for the mini game) goes up. I've gotten up to 120 once and that is my record.
The game really has too much to offer than I can say here. I would give it a 5 out of 5 rating, and say it is better than that. It is hard for someone to really hate the game. It has something for everyone in my opinion. Just to add alittle info, I rock with fox. Up next, Pictures. ;D
